We Stand with DREAMers & the LGBTQ+ Community

In the midst of a global health crisis that has disproportionately impacted poor immigrant communities of color, and with the backdrop of nationwide demonstrations in support of Black lives, this week's Supreme Court decisions have brought hope to communities like ours that have consistently been under attack by systemic inequities and institutional violence.

On Thursday June 18, 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to end DACA, providing a huge relief to nearly 650,000 DACA recipients and the workforce across the country that depends on their contributions. This decision comes just days after the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed Federal Nondiscrimination Protections against LGBTQ people, barring employers from discriminating against workers on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion. Both decisions are important victories for our diverse community here in San Jose and for the families that we organize within East San Jose.

We thank the organizers who fought tirelessly to advocate for these policies, and we celebrate with our families and friends who have waited far too long for these policies. We acknowledge that there is still more work ahead.

At SOMOS Mayfair we are guided by the belief that ALL people should live without fear of persecution and inhumane treatment. We believe all people deserve to live a life of dignity, free from discrimination based on the color of their skin, legal status or sexual orientation and gender identity. As a community committed to building a movement for justice, we know that together we can make San Jose and the Bay Area a place that truly welcomes all. Our organizing and policy work is proof of our longstanding commitment to continue pushing for policies that truly reflect the needs and dreams of our communities.

With elections right around the corner we must be vigilant to ensure our voices, interests and rights are also reflected in the candidates we elect. And while we applaud the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions, we must continue to urge Congress to provide a permanent solution for DREAMers and their families by passing comprehensive immigration reform. We must also urge Congress to go one step further and pass the Equality ACT to provide explicit non-discriminatory protections for LGBTQ people across key areas of life.
