The Mayfair Improvement Initiative has
officially changed its name to Somos Mayfair.
Founded in 1997, the Initiative began as a partnership between the residents of Mayfair, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Community Foundation Silicon Valley. Hundreds of residents joined together to identify and prioritize changes we wanted to make to address poverty, fear and violence. Our allies brought new programs and resources to our community. Now, at our 10-year mark, we are reflecting on lessons we have learned, celebrating our accomplishments, and looking forward to continuing our work in both familiar and deeper ways. As a result, we are changing our name to Somos Mayfair, signifying our pride and our commitment to building a community of love, hope and belonging.
“Changing our organization’s name to Somos Mayfair is an affirmation, an embrace, a challenge, a call and response. It is inspired in part by a rallying cry from the civil rights struggle: ‘I am somebody.’ ”
