‘Here, we ask people what they want and how they want us to help them. We give families the opportunity to show what they can do, and with these tools, they are ready to get to work.”

Family Support

Using the peer-to-peer model of Promotores (community educators), Somos Mayfair provides case management to families and connects them to resources they may not otherwise know about.

Promotores support more than 200 Mayfair families with children ages 0-5 each year through our Siembra Family Support Program (Siembra means “planting seeds”). Promotores are a critical “first contact” for families living in Mayfair; meeting with them in their homes, and together identifying their strengths, goals and needs. Promotores educate young parents about how to prepare their children for success in school. They provide referrals and support families in accessing services including emergency food and shelter, legal assistance, early learning opportunities for their children, health insurance, services and screenings, adult literacy/GED, and English as a Second Language classes.

In 2006, to address the crisis of obesity and diabetes in the Latino community, we launched a multi-year community-wide health campaign. With the help of a number of health organizations, we offer Siembra parents and children culturally-based nutrition classes, parent and child exercise programs, and free health screenings and services.
